Patricia Prelock, Ph.D., is Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Professor of Communication Sciences & Disorders, and Professor of Pediatrics in the College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. Dr. Prelock coordinates parent training programs for caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and examines the effectiveness of interventions in social cognition for children with ASD. She has been awarded more than 11 million dollars in funding to develop innovations in interdisciplinary training supporting children with neurodevelopmental disabilities and their families, to facilitate training in speech-language pathology, and to support her autism intervention work. She has more than 150 publications and 470 peer-reviewed and invited presentations in the areas of autism and other neurodevelopmental disabilities, collaboration, and family-centered care. Dr. Prelock is an ASHA Fellow, a University of Vermont Scholar and a Board-Certified Specialist in Child Language. She served as the 2013 ASHA President.

My primary area of interest is in neural mechanisms of voice control. I have worked on this general topic for over 40 years. My early work was done on nonhuman primates in which we attempted to learn which areas of the brain are involved in vocalization through the brain lesioning approach. I also worked with Erich Luschei studying neural mechanisms of jaw control, and in this work, I learned how to do single unit recordings from the brain in awake behaving animals. In this work we made important discoveries of the role of jaw muscle spindle afferent endings on jaw control (J. Neurophysiology; J Physiology (London)). Thereafter with my move to Northwestern University, I used the single unit recording methods to study neural function in the midbrain periaqueductal gray and nucleus ambiguous in monkeys as they were vocalizing. This work demonstrated that the midbrain periaqueductal gray played an important role in the coordination of laryngeal and respiratory muscles on vocal control (Brain Research, Experimental Brain Research and the Journal of Neurophysiology). In about 1995 I developed a technique to study neural control of the voice by perturbing voice auditory feedback. This work was based on the well-established technique of perturbation analysis that has been used in other motor systems. In this work, we measure voice fundamental frequency and voice amplitude changes during steady vowel vocalizations as well as during speech following perturbations in auditory feedback. This technique has been widely accepted and is now used by voice scientists around the world. Our most recent work has involved ERP recording in the voice perturbation technique, and this research has led us to insightful discoveries of brain function during human vocalization. Namely, we have determined that voice pitch perturbations presented at the onset of vocalization activate a system that is important for identification of one’s own voice. Perturbations presented after the onset of vocalization trigger mechanisms that are involved in correcting for errors in vocal production. I began working with Don Robin about six years ago, and through this collaboration we have been using neuroimaging techniques (fMRI and PET) along with transcranial magnetic stimulation to study the role of auditory feedback in voice control. This work has also led to important papers on structural equation modeling and dynamic causal modeling of the neural circuitry involved in the role of auditory feedback in voice control (Neuroimage, Neuropsychologia). Most recently, working with my post-doctoral fellow, Dr. Sona Patel, we developed a new technique for the study of volitional mechanisms of voice control based on perturbations in voice auditory feedback. This technique allows us to investigate neural correlates of feedforward mechanisms of voice control. Altogether, the voice perturbation studies, ERP recordings, fMRI neuroimaging and neural modeling are leading to a better understanding of the neural mechanisms involved in the role of auditory feedback and voice control. My background in the establishment of new techniques for the study of neural mechanisms of voice control places me in an ideal position to participate in the studies in this proposal.

Melinda L. Richards, Associate Professor, holds the Bachelor’s in Music Education (Magna Cum Laude) from Tennessee Technological University; the M.Mus. (percussion performance) and the Ph.D. in Speech Science from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Following a successful career as Commander/Conductor in the United States Air Force, she returned to her native Tennessee to become a certified speech-language pathologist (SLP). Having served in this capacity for seven years in the schools of Putnam County, she joined the Communication Disorders faculty in 1997. Dr. Richards has taught Speech & Language Development to students from the College of Education; Introduction to Communication Disorders, Communication Problems in Childhood, and Anatomy & Physiology for Speech Pathology and Audiology to students in the major, as well as provided clinical supervision in the MTSU Speech & Hearing Clinic. Additionally, she developed and strengthened the course offerings of Neurology for Speech-Language Pathologists & Audiologists and the Clinical Practicum (externship) in the Schools. Regarding the latter, she developed the application and won approval from the State Department of Education to offer bachelor-level licensure enabling qualified graduates to work in the schools, through the School Speech-Language Teacher license, making MTSU the only undergraduate program in the state to offer this credential. Dr. Richards holds dual licensure from the Tennessee Departments of Education and Health-Related Boards. Over the course of her career, Dr. Richards has held a number of positions in leadership, in service to the university, the state, and the nation. Dr. Richards served from 2002-2005 as Faculty Senator, during which time she served on the University Steering Committee; on the University Standing Committee on Veteran’s and Military Affairs from 2010-2013; and currently serves on the Academic Misconduct Committee. She was selected in 2012 to be a member of a team of professionals from her discipline to work with colleagues in South Africa through the People-to-People Exchange Program. Dr. Richards is past president of the Tennessee Association of Audiologists & Speech-Language Pathologists; past chair of the State Board of Communication Sciences & Disorders; and currently serves as the Tennessee SLP representative to the Advisory Council of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. She is presently serving as President of the National Association of Pre-Professional Programs.

Dr. Den Ouden was trained in formal linguistics and neurolinguistics at the University of Groningen, before conducting postdoctoral work in neuroimaging and aphasiology at Northwestern University. His research program is aimed at the use of neurophysiological interventions to enhance treatment outcome in aphasia. To this end, Den Ouden investigates the neural correlates of linguistic structure-building or deconstruction processes during language production and comprehension in healthy and language-impaired speakers and he has also conducted studies into the neural correlates of phonological planning and overt speech production. Recently, his lab at the University of South Carolina has started experimental work with high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) as a method for modulating language functions in healthy speakers. The aim of this work is to test the viability of focal neuromodulation for raising the cap on language treatment outcomes.
