You-lin Qiao, MD, PhD, professor and Director for Department of Cancer Epidemiology, National Cancer Center, Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College Beijing, China. Before returning back to China in 1997, he was training for 11 years at Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health and Cancer Prevention Studies Branch, NCI/NIH, USA. He is also director of International Collaboration Department, Cancer Foundation of China, and Deputy Director of the MOH National Expert Committee for Cancer Screening and Prevention in China. He is an author on over 480 peer reviewed publications in both English and Chinese. As an expert in cancer prevention and control, he served as WHO Director-General’s Cancer Control Advisory Committee and WHO’s Cancer Technical Advisory Groups for helping to promote cancer prevention and control programs in developing countries. He is involved in many national and international projects to study etiology, primary intervention, and early detection of a variety of cancers through multidisciplinary and global collaborations. He received 2011 WHO/IARC Medal of Honor. (The 8h Sir Richard Doll Lecture in IARC: Implementation of cancer screening and prevention in China – Evidence and Reality).

The central theme of Gary Stein’s research has been to discover mechanisms controlling proliferation and differentiation emphasizing compromised regulation linked with disease. His lab characterizes transcriptional regulation that mediates cell cycle control, focusing on molecular mechanisms regulating gene expression at the G1/S phase transition in normal and tumor cells and the abbreviated pluripotent cell cycle in human embryonic stem cells. He has a major commitment to investigating bone tissue specific gene expression, including microRNA-mediated control, within the context of skeletal development and bone remodeling as well as aberrations that accompany the onset and progression of skeletal disease. The Stein lab is defining functional relationships between the subnuclear organization of regulatory proteins and gene expression, pursuing mechanisms that support combinatorial organization and assembly of regulatory machinery in nuclear microenvironments and epigenetic control of cell fate and lineage commitment in biological control and cancer.

Professor Diana Anderson currently holds the Established Chair of the Division of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Bradford, UK. She obtained her first degree in the University of Wales and second degrees in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manchester. After tutoring at the University of Sydney, Australia, she became a research worker in the Department of Cancer Studies at the University of Leeds and at the Paterson Laboratories, Christie Hospital, Manchester. In 1974, she was appointed as Head of Mutagenesis Studies at ICI’s Central Toxicology Laboratory. Professor Anderson joined BIBRA International in 1981 as Head of Genetic and Reproductive Toxicology and became Assistant Director and Group Forum Co-ordinator in 1987. In 1992, she became Senior Associate and Co-ordinator of External Affairs at BIBRA. She has attended various management courses. She has served on the editorial board of 8 international journals, has over 345 publications, has edited/authored 8 books and guest-edited 9 special issues of 4 international journals. She is Series Editor of books in Current Toxicology for John Wiley and Sons and Issues in Toxicology for the Royal Society of Chemistry. She is an active Committee member and has been Vice-President of the Institute of Biology. She has successfully supervised 16 PhD, 2 MPhil and 2 MSc students and is currently supervising another 4 PhDs. He worked as contract researcher in the same Institute and learned several biomedical technologies, in order to study structural and enzymatic proteins in breast cyst fluids needle-aspirated from healthy and diseased women affected by gross cystic breast disease. Successively, he appointed as Researcher in the field of cellular and clinical biochemistry of breast secretions, characterizing both nipple aspirate and breast cyst fluids through biochemical and morphological approaches; he corroborated the potential clinical interest of breast secretion protein analyses and identified subsets of women at risk for subsequent breast cancer through the bio-molecular characterization of Type II NAFs.

Erika completed her first degree in microbiology in her native Pennsylvania. She then undertook a PhD degree in the laboratory of Thomas Braciale at the University of Virginia, where she was awarded a Presidential Fellowship for the duration of her studies. Erika’s thesis work examined the migration and differentiation of memory CD4 T cells during respiratory syncytial virus RSV infection. Key novel findings included the identification of an immunodominant MHC Class II epitope within the RSV attachment G protein, to which both Th1 and Th2 memory T cells are directed, and the elucidation of the kinetics of memory CD4 T cell activation and trafficking through lymph nodes and lungs during the recall response to viral infection. After completing her PhD at the end of 2006, Erika immigrated to England to join the research group of Professor Tracy Hussell at Imperial College London as a Research Associate.

Dr. Yvonne Oligschläger was born on December 6, 1987, in Velsen, the Netherlands. From 2006 to 2009, she studied at the University of Applied Sciences in Utrecht (the Netherlands), during which she worked at the department of Cancer Genetics, Università degli Studi di Turino (Candiolo, Italy). From 2009 to 2011, she studied her master’s degree at Maastricht University, during which she worked at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam. In September 2011, she started her PhD at Maastricht University, department of Molecular Genetics, with Dr. Neumann and Prof. Glatz, where she studied the physiological role of the key metabolic enzyme AMP-activated protein kinase in the context of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In 2013, she received the Best Oral Presentation at the 1st European AMPK Workshop, and in 2014, she was awarded an Early Investigator Commendation by the Society for Heart and Vascular Metabolism. In October 2015, she joined the group of Prof. Ronit Shiri-Sverdlov, where she is performing high-quality translational research in the context of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Dr. Tsviya Olender has a PhD in physical chemistry from the Weizmann Institute. In 1999, she joined the group of Prof. Lancet as a postdoc and continued on as a research associate. Dr. Taosheng Huang is a physician-scientist, currently he is a professor with tenure in Human Genetics, Director, Program of Mitochondrial Medicine. Director of the Molecular Diagnostic laboratory at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC). Before he moved to CCHMC 2012, he was was an associate professor with tenure in Pediatrics, Developmental and Cell Biology, and Pathology at University of California, Irvine. He was also the director for the MitoMed Molecular Diagnostic laboratory and Director of the Cardiovascular Genetic Clinic.In 2001, Dr. Huang moved to the University of California, Irvine as an independent investigator.During this time, Dr. Huang’s group was the first to link TBX3 and cancer. They also found that TBX3 plays a very important role in human embryonic stem cell differentiation. Currently, this project is funded by NIH R01 and a R01 supplement. To develop a therapy for genetic disease, Dr. Huang’s lab has also actively pursued the Drosophila model for human genetic diseases. They have created a Drosophila optic atrophy model and identified two distinctive pathways that cause cell loss by mutation of the OPA1 gene.In 2012, Dr. Huang joined Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) to direct the program of Mitochondrial Medicine He was appointed member of the special committee for Yusheng Yuyou of People’s Republic of China and advisory board member to Chinese Ministry of Health for targeted therapy. Moreover, he recently became a principal investigator for birth defect control program of Chinese Ministry of Health and a Steering Committee member for Standardized Residency and Fellowship Training. Dr. Shyam Reddy is a Professor and Director, Cancer Biology Program, Department of OB/GYN, Morehouse School of Medicine, Georgia Cancer center for excellence, Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta, Ga. He carried out his Ph.D. work at the Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad, India and at Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, Gottingen, West Germany. His Ph.D. work was published as two papers (back to back) in the prestigious Nature journal for which he was awarded National Young Scientist award by the Prime minister of India. He obtained postdoctoral training in molecular biology at Yale University, CT (Dr Weissman, PNAS member). Dr Reddy discovered and cloned several cancer genes/oncogenes (close to 20 genes) and studied their functions. The most notable genes discovered by Dr Reddy include ERG-1, ERG-2, ERG-3 and human FLI-1genes. Drs Reddy and Rao named the gene as ERG (ETS Related Gene, published in prestigious journals Science and PNAS). ERG is a transcriptional factor, endothelial permeability factor and also a stem cell factor and is involved in 50-80% of Prostate cancers, Ewing sarcoma and also leukemias (AML). Other notable ETS genes discovered and studied by Dr Reddy include human Fli-1 (involved in 80% of Ewing family of tumors, Leukemias and Prostate cancer), EWS-Fli-1 (involved in 90% of Ewing Sarcoma, Pediatric cancer), EWS-erg (involved in Ewing Sarcoma), TLS-erg (involved in Acute Myeloid Leukemia), EWS (involved in multiple cancers), TLS/FUS (involved in multiple cancers), ELK-1 (Drs Reddy and Rao named this gene as ETS Like Gene, published in prestigious journals Science and Nature) and EWS-ATF-1 (malignant Melanoma of Soft Parts/Clear cell sarcoma). Dr Reddy and his group have also discovered novel post-translational mechanism mediated by BRCA2 in Breast Cancer cells that will have global effect on the Gene Expression, Protein turnover, Cell Death, Cancer and other Human diseases. Dr Reddy and his group have shown that ERG and FLI-1 proteins involved in several cancers are responsible for making cancer cells resistant to chemo-therapeutic agents. They are targeting these onco-proteins or their functions to develop novel targeted therapeutic agents. Using this strategy, they have developed several novel therapeutic agents (patent being submitted) that target Prostate cancer, Ewing Sarcoma, Breast cancer (including Triple Negative Breast Cancer), Pancreatic cancer, Ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer etc. These small molecules appear to be targeted therapeutic agents with no or little effect on normal cells. Dr Reddy received two grants from DOD to study on two targeted therapeutic agents against prostate cancer. Dr Reddy and his colleagues have also shown that anti-epileptic drug Valproic acid (VPA) targets ERG-positive Prostate cancers and Ewing Sarcoma and identified the molecular mechanism of action of VPA on ERG/Fli-1 associated cancer. Recently, they have identified novel ways by which ERG/ETS oncoproteins target different signaling pathways that leads to prostate and other cancers (leukemias, lymphomas and sarcomas). Dr Reddy and his colleagues have identified novel molecular mechanism of activation of TGF beta–signaling pathway by ERG oncoprotein in prostate cancer. Recently, Dr Reddy and his colleagues have shown that ETV1 onco-protein induces certain kinases in cancer cells which deregulate the critical Wnt/beta catenin pathway. They have also identified therapeutic agent that interferes with this process. They have also demonstrated that this therapeutic agent targets these cancer cells effectively (manuscript in press, 2016). These therapeutic agents will have a profound impact on prevention and treatment of prostate cancer which may help to reduce health disparity seen in minority prostate cancer patients. Recently, Dr Reddy’s group decoded non-coding DNA and its non-coding RNA and discovered novel tumor suppressors which will revolutionize the landscape of biology, diagnosis and therapy (In press, 2017, www.reddyesp.com).

Afterward, he moved to the C. elegans Unit directed by Dr. Natascia Ventura, in the Lab of Prof. Roberto Testi at the University of Rome "Tor Vergata", where he successfully applied for a PhD program in Immunology and Applied Biotechnologies. During his PhD training, he investigated the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in aging and neurodegenerative diseases, using the nematode C. elegans as a model organism, and he won a short-term EMBO fellowship which allows him to visit the Lab of DNA Damage and Ageing of Prof. Björn Schumacher (CECAD, University of Cologne, Germany). He is actually working, as a post-doc, in the Lab of Prof. Christian Reinhardt (University Hospital of Cologne, Cologne, Germany) where he is using genetically engineered mouse models to study p53-dependent tumor suppressive pathways.

Biography

After graduating from Korea University and University of Göttingen, he did his PhD in human molecular genetics at Freie Universität Berlin and Max-Planck-Institute for Molecular Genetics in Germany. He worked on Developmental Genome Anatomy Project (DGAP) at Harvard Medical School for 5 years and now an associate professor at Georgia Regents University in USA.
