This study examines the empirical and grey literature related to the transmission and prevention of SARS-CoV-2, along with mask regulation, masks types and efficacy, current mask compliance and use. The Results highlight the importance of regular changing of disposable masks and washing of homemade masks after each use for maximum effectiveness. The Conclusion section aptly presents the argument that the wearing of masks needs to be mandated as public health strategies by government and/or public health officials regionally and nationally to help prevent the transmission of COVID-19.

Further comments on the paper

Comments: This review focusses on the effectiveness of masks as a preventative strategy to decrease transmission of SARS-CoV-2 which will act as a physical barrier against the virus and decrease the risk of the person wearing the mask, therefore preventing the transmission of the virus to public. The study holds great significance as the whole country is going through a pandemic currently and masks have become the “new normal” for our everyday lives. Masks have many advantages and benefits, however, there are limitations associated with wearing a mask.
