Sleeve Gastrectomy in a Patient with Obesity and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: A Case Report

Review Data

™      Significance of the Study: This case report on bariatric surgery in a patient with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) focusses on management challenges, preoperative assessment and one-year outcome. This is significant because patients with EDS and morbid obesity may increase the engagement and commitment of the multidisciplinary team, well aware of the potential surgical risks but less aware of the management of EDS-related surgical complications, while in this particular case, Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) was chosen, taking into consideration the clinical conditions and past medical history of the patient.

™      Fit with Journal: The manuscript is highly suited for the journal Global Surgery Case Reports.

™      The Discussion clearly explains the challenges in treating the patient in the present case with the figures adequately justifying the report findings. It also offers insightful suggestions with respect to the treatment approach.

™      The manuscript is mostly well-written except a few minor errors (already corrected in the galley proof), which are listed below –

§  Several words were misspelled, e.g., “hernia” in the 1st sentence of 3rd paragraph of Case Report, “dysmotility” in the 7th sentence of Abstract and the 2nd sentence of 3rd paragraph of Case Report, “hypermobility” in the 1st sentence of 1st paragraph of Background, “perforation” in the 2nd sentence of 4th paragraph of Discussion and “commitment” in the 2nd sentence of Conclusion.

§  In the 3rd sentence of 1st paragraph of Background, “such as joint laxity, vascular manifestations, kyphoscoliosis, arthrochalasia and dermatosparaxis” is a repetition and thus should be removed.

§  Helicobacter pylori” in the 1st sentence of the 3rd paragraph of Case Report should be italicized as it is a scientific name.

§  In the 4th sentence of 2nd paragraph of Background, “of” should be replaced with “in” and “sex-matched” should be hyphenated.

§  In the 2nd sentence of 3rd paragraph of Discussion, “issue” should be replaced with “issues”.

§  The words like “gastrointestinal” and “postoperative” should be unhyphenated throughout the text for the sake of consistency.

§  Punctuations and articles, e.g., “the” were missing in several places throughout the text.
