Bariatric Surgery Conversions at a Revisional Referral Center: A Subset Analysis of Clinical Outcomes from a Rural Community Hospital Accredited Program

Review Data

o   Purpose and Significance of Study: This retrospective study offers a subset analysis of the primary and secondary clinical outcomes of bariatric surgery conversions or revisions performed by a single surgeon in a rural community hospital. Although there are multiple limitations of the study, its significance lies in that revisional bariatric surgeries are a technically demanding superspeciality with high rate of complications and are mostly reported from urban centers rather than the technically limited rural ones.

o   Fit with Scope of Journal: The manuscript is of high interest for the journal International Journal of Surgical Case Reports.

o   The Discussion provides a thorough analysis of the outcomes, adequately lays down the limitations of the study and elaborates on the takeaway from the results of this study.

o   The manuscript is mostly well-written. It contains a few minor errors (already corrected in the galley proof) listed below –

·       Words like “preoperative”, “comorbidity”, “workup” and “cytoprotection” must be written without hyphens.

·       In the 1st sentence of the 2nd paragraph of the Introduction, “have” must be replaced with “has”.

·       In the 1st sentence of the 1st paragraph of the Results, “the” before “total” must be replaced with “a”, and throughout the text, “a” before “SG” and “RYGB” must be replaced with “an”.

·       In the last sentence of the 1st paragraph of the Discussion, “the” before “robotic” must be removed, and in the 4th sentence of the 3rd paragraph of the Discussion, “the” before “hospitalization” must be removed.

·       In the 1st sentence of the 1st paragraph of the discussion, “that is” must be removed, in the 2nd sentence of the 1st paragraph of the Discussion, “of” before “from” must be removed, and in the 3rd sentence of the 1st paragraph of the Discussion, “where” before “resources” must be removed.

·       In the 1st sentence of the 8th paragraph of the discussion, the sentence must end after “(5.6%)”.
