Effects of Red and Blue Light on the Cardiac Autonomic Nervous System
Effects of Red and Blue Light on the Cardiac Autonomic Nervous System
Review Data
Significance of the Study: This pilot study finds out if RL (Red Light) and/or BL (Blue Light) affects Heart Rate Variability (HRV). This is significant because information about the impact of colored light on the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) is quite sparse. Although we are mostly not able to perceive non-visual effects of light, it can initiate a number of complex and so far only partially explored mechanisms. Since it is very difficult to expose test persons to light in a well-controlled environment (majority of existing data carry methodical problems such as short exposure, uncontrolled intensity and spectrum), special light cabin was developed for this study to minimize inter- and intraindividual variability.
Fit with Journal: The manuscript is highly suited for the Journal of Integrative Cardiology Open Access.
The experiments performed are quite persuasive and the observations are appropriately examined and clarified in the Discussion. The figures and tables adequately justify the study findings. The small numbers of tested participants and the character of a pilot study comes out as a limitation which makes the discussion speculative and thus calls for more research on this topic.
The manuscript is mostly well-written except a few minor errors (already corrected in the galley proof), which are listed below –
§ The word “parasympathic” should be corrected to “parasympathetic” under Keywords.
§ In the 1st sentence of Results under Abstract, “were” should be replaced with “was” and in the 3rd sentence, “increases of blood pressure were” should be replaced with “increase in blood pressure were”.
§ In the 3rd sentence of Statistics, “Kolmogorov-Smirnow-test” should be corrected to “Kolmogorov-Smirnov-test”.
§ The word “wavelength” should be written as a single word throughout the text.
§ In the 1st sentence of 1st paragraph of Purpose, “an” should be replaced with “a”.
§ In the last sentence of 3rd paragraph of Discussion, “support” should be replaced with “supports”, in the 5th sentence of the 5th paragraph, “Yuda an colleagues” should be replaced with “Yuda and colleagues” and in the 4th sentence of 6th paragraph, “found patients” should be replaced with “found in patients”.
§ Commas and articles, e.g., “the” were missing in several places throughout the text.
