Non-Invasive Treatment of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: Systematic Literature Review by Using Citation Network Analysis

Review Data

Purpose and Significance of the Study: This is a systematic literature review of the various non-invasive treatments for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS)a disease whose etiopathogenesis is yet to be determinedThe purpose of this study is to summarize previous findings in this area, map the major research clusters, summarize the general trends in the research and provide potential areas of future research. A couple of similar studies in the current literature and a couple of limitations aside, the precise scope of the review, the updated information, and the citation network analysis used (increasing the objectivity in the data) make this manuscript worth publishing.

Fit with Scope of Journal: The manuscript is of very high interest for the journal Spine and Surgery.

The errors in the manuscript are listed below –

·       The 3rd paragraph in the Discussion section seems problematic. Since this study has exclusively focused on non-surgical treatments of AIS, the 10 most influential papers in this context would anyway focus on the non-surgical options. So, the argument on which this paragraph is based stands invalid.

In the Abstract section –

·       In the 1st sentence, “of” must be replaced by “from” and “the” must be inserted before “spinal”.

·       In the 3rd sentence, “the” must be inserted before “noninvasive”.

·       In the 6th sentence, “the” must be inserted before “HistCite” and “UCINet”, “software” must be in plural and “referenced” must be replaced by “referred to”.

·       In the 8th sentence, “on” must be inserted at the end of the sentence.

·       In the 9th sentence, “independent extraction of articles” must be replaced by “The articles were independently extracted” and “selecting relevant articles of the field” may be removed as it was previously mentioned.

·       In the 17th sentence, “a” must be inserted before “few” and “nonrigid” must be written as “non-rigid”.

·       In the 18th sentence, “,” after “recently” must be replaced by “;”.

In the Introduction section –

  In the 3rd paragraph –

·       In the 2nd sentence, “,” must be inserted after “stimulation”.

·       In the 4th sentence, “the” must be inserted before “uncertainties”.

  In the 4th paragraph –

·       In the 3rd sentence, “the” must be inserted before “knowledge”.

  In the 5th paragraph –

·       In the 5th sentence, “and” must be replaced by “,”.

In the Methods section –

  In the 1st paragraph –

·       The 1st sentence must be reconstructed as “This study followed the research methodology of Colicchia and Strozzi [14] and Wetzstein et al. [17].

  In the 5th paragraph –

·       The meaning of the 4th sentence “No…study” is not clear. It must be reconstructed.

·       In the 5th sentence, “the” must be inserted before “3 authors”, “relevant”, “selected” and “non-operative”, “so as to” must be replaced by “to”, “that” must be inserted before “all” and “,” must be inserted after “AIS”.

·       In the last sentence, “were” before “reached” must be replaced by “was”.

  In the 6th paragraph –

·       In the 5th sentence, “the” must be inserted before “journal”.

·       In the last sentence, “related” must be replaced by “relevant”.

  In the 7th paragraph –

·       In the 3rd sentence, “,” must be inserted after “asking”.

  In the 8th paragraph –

·       In the 3rd paragraph, “obtained” must be replaced by “obtaining”.

In the Results section –

Under Study selection and data extraction –

·       In the 1st sentence, “the” must be inserted before “3 authors”.

  Under Identifying research clusters –

  In the 1st paragraph –

·       In the 2nd sentence, what “assumption” is being referred to?

  In the 2nd paragraph –

·       In the 5th sentence, “the” must be inserted before “clusters”.

·       In the 7th sentence, “,” must be inserted after “with brace treatment” and “respectively” must be replaced by “each”.

  In the 3rd paragraph –

·       In the 2nd sentence, “whereas” must be replaced by “since”.

·       In the last sentence, “the” must be inserted before “treatment”.

In the Discussion section –

  In the 1st paragraph –

·       In the 1st sentence, the term “spinal progression” must be replaced by “curve progression of spine”.

·       In the 5th sentence, “Wiley, Thomson” must be replaced by “Wiley et al.”.

  In the 2nd paragraph –

·       “The” must be inserted before “uncertainties”.

  In the 4th paragraph –

·       In the last sentence, “quantity” must be replaced by “number”.

  In the 5th paragraph –

·       In the 2nd sentence, “,” must be inserted after “particular” and “were” before “only” must be replaced by “had”.

  In the 6th paragraph –

·       In the 1st sentence, “of” after “most” must be removed, “the” must be inserted before “brace cluster” and the words “in which 41.7% of them represented patient compliance of brace treatment and tightness of brace were the largest concerns that might affect the brace effectiveness” do not make clear sense.

·       In the 2nd sentence, “system” must be in plural.

·       In the 3rd sentence, the words “relieving means of treatment compliance” do not make sense.
